Course Overview

American Red Cross r.24 Lifeguarding Instructor/Instructor Trainer Recertification

This blended learning course allows eligible Lifeguarding Instructors and Instructor Trainers to renew their instructor-level certification. It combines required online coursework with an Instructor Trainer-led, in-person session covering current standards, teaching methods, administration, rescue skills and evaluations.

Successful completion renews the participant’s instructor-level certification for two years.

Skills and Topics

Participants will review and demonstrate competency in:

  • Current Red Cross Lifeguarding standards

  • Instructor responsibilities and course administration

  • Lesson plans, course materials and evaluation procedures

  • Entries, approaches and victim rescues

  • Surface dives and submerged-victim rescues

  • Backboarding, spinal motion restriction and extrication

  • Two-rescuer CPR and AED use

  • Surveillance and lifeguard rotations

  • Multiple-rescuer response scenarios

  • Teaching, evaluating and providing corrective feedback

Instructor Trainer participants may also be required to complete an instructor-candidate teaching evaluation.

Eligibility and Requirements

Participants must:

  • Be at least 17 years old

  • Hold a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor or Instructor Trainer certification, or one expired no more than one year

  • Be in good standing with the American Red Cross

  • Complete both required online sessions before class

  • Bring proof of certification and online completion

  • Attend and participate in the entire course

  • Demonstrate all required skills to Red Cross standards

  • Complete the required teaching assignment

  • Score at least 80% on the applicable written examination

Important: The one-year eligibility period does not extend an expired certification or authorize an instructor to teach while expired.

Course Format and Length

This course follows the American Red Cross blended learning format and includes online coursework and an in-person training session.

Online Coursework: Approximately 6–8 Hours

Participants must independently complete:

  • Basic-level Lifeguarding blended learning content

  • Lifeguarding Instructor or Instructor Trainer Recertification content

All online coursework must be completed before attending the in-person session.

In-Person Training: 7.5 Hours

The course includes approximately 6.5 hours of required instruction. Participants should plan to spend approximately 7.5 hours at the training facility, including breaks and transitions.

The in-person session includes:

  • Program and administrative review

  • Skill practice and refinement

  • Water-rescue evaluations

  • CPR/AED and first aid evaluations

  • Team-response scenarios

  • Teaching assignments

  • Written examination

  • Final course evaluation

Optional Lifeguarding Certification Test-Out — $105

Participants may add an optional basic-level American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification test-out immediately following the LGI/IT Recertification course. This option is for eligible instructors who also need to renew their basic-level Lifeguarding certification.

Important eligibility requirement: Participants must hold a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification or one that expired no more than 30 days before the course date. Certifications expired more than 30 days are not eligible for this add-on.

The test-out adds approximately one hour. Participants selecting it should plan to remain at the training facility until approximately 6:00 p.m.

To earn the additional two-year Lifeguarding certification, participants must successfully complete all required:

  • Written examinations

  • Lifeguarding skill assessments

  • CPR/AED and first aid skill assessments

  • Water-rescue scenarios

  • Multiple-rescuer team-response scenarios

The $105 add-on includes the additional testing, course administration and the $48 American Red Cross certification fee.

Advance registration is required. The test-out must be purchased before the course begins and completed immediately following the associated LGI/IT Recertification course. It is nonrefundable and nontransferable.

Adding the test-out does not guarantee certification. Participants must successfully meet every American Red Cross certification requirement.

Before You Register

Before attending the in-person course, each participant must:

  • Confirm that their LGI or LGIT certification meets the eligibility requirements

  • Complete required online learning sessions

  • Review the current Lifeguarding Instructor’s Manual

  • Review the current Lifeguarding Manual

  • Bring the Lifeguarding Instructor’s Manual in print format

  • Bring proof of instructor-level certification

  • Bring proof of online course completion

  • Bring a valid photo ID

  • Bring an adult and pediatric CPR pocket mask

  • Bring a swimsuit, towel, dry clothing, water, snacks, and lunch

  • Be prepared to demonstrate all required land and water skills

Participants are responsible for confirming their eligibility before registering.

Important Registration Notice

Registration does not guarantee certification. To earn LGI or LGIT recertification, participants must:

  • Complete all required online coursework

  • Attend and participate in the entire in-person session

  • Demonstrate all required skills to the American Red Cross standard

  • Complete all required teaching assignments

  • Pass the appropriate written examination with a minimum score of 80%

  • Complete all course requirements successfully

Participants who purchase the optional basic-level Lifeguarding certification test-out must also successfully complete all additional written examinations, skills, and final assessments required for that certification.

Refund and Transfer Policy

All course registrations and optional add-ons are nonrefundable once booked. By registering, participants acknowledge that they have read, understand, and agree to this refund and transfer policy. Participants are responsible for verifying that they meet the course eligibility requirements before registering. Participants who are ineligible, fail to complete the required online learning, arrive without required documentation, or cannot demonstrate the required skills are not eligible for a refund. Participants may request a one-time transfer to another available LGI/IT Recertification course by providing at least 48 hours’ notice before the original class start time.

A $50 transfer fee applies. Participants who provide less than 48 hours’ notice, do not attend, arrive too late to participate, or fail to complete the course requirements will forfeit their registration and must pay the full course fee to register for another class.

Participants who purchase the optional Lifeguarding certification test-out but do not complete or pass it are not eligible for a refund.

There are no exceptions to this policy, including illness, injury, medical reasons, scheduling conflicts, transportation problems, or personal emergencies.

Learning Accommodations

SoCal Safety Institute follows American Red Cross course standards and supports reasonable learning accommodations when possible. Participants who require an accommodation should contact SoCal Safety Institute before registering or as early as possible before class. Accommodations may support access to learning, but all participants must still successfully complete the required written examinations, teaching assignments, land skills, water skills, and final evaluations to earn certification.
